It's really interesting to hear that you experienced this to such an extent as a man, thank you for sharing. My husband is also a tall black man who feels like he can travel safely alone (more safely outside of the U.S., but that's a separate topic) and we've had converstations since we arrived about how threatening it is, even as a man, to be in all-male spaces so frequently. It feels inherently less safe for everyone.
