Practical advice on moving abroad

You’ve done the research and decided you are definitely moving to a new country; you’ve figured out logistics, finances, housing, transportation, and maybe even employment. While the internet has a ton of information, you are unsure how to prepare for such a big move. Here are the three pieces of advice I offer when someone asks me how to move to a new country: do the research, come prepared, and be patient. This article is part 2 of 3: come prepared.

Come Prepared

The first time I moved abroad for a work contract, I was 22. I wore a sundress and used a vintage suitcase as a carry-on because I wanted my life to resemble an indie film. In the last 15 years I have learned how to better prepare my suitcases, my documents, and my mindset.

Be prepared for your flights

Step 1: Prepare your bags

Before a move, I do four things to ensure all of my bags arrive at the correct destination. First, I put an index card with my name, email address, and hotel or work address in the country I am going to in the top front pocket of each piece of luggage.
